root canal pain

The next day after my root canal was done I felt a sharp electric shock in my tooth...whenever I inhaled I felt it and at times while doing nothing, it appeared. My question is this normal pain? I went back to the dentist to relieve the pain, he lowered the filling, which has helped but 3 days later I still feel it from time to time. Is this expected pain or could something else be wrong?

Hi Liz,

Pain after a root canal is not normal, you should have relief of dental pain almost immediately after the procedure.

You should go back to the dentist that originally did the work if the pain persists, and if he does not do anything about it, see another dentist for a second opinion.

In some cases, a dentist may break a piece of the file off in the canal of the root, and that may cause problems, though they should see this in the final x-ray and either remove it, or send you to a specialist if they can't.
